Introduction
The future for Hill Country sheep and beef farming is going to involve at least some tree planting for environmental purposes and carbon sequestration involving the emissions trading scheme ("ETS").
While ETS participation is a useful additional revenue generator, it is not without risk because of the implications of disease and storm damage where the carbon has been claimed ("NZUs") and sold. (
Note:
replanting is required with no further claims possible until the sequestered carbon claimed to date has been replaced. It is likely that replanting will be impossible on the same land so the replacement costs could be significant.)
Then much further down the track, where old trees are dying/falling over, without carefully planning the planting regime, there could be carbon deficits which are likely to be very expensive to cover if the owner has sold all the allocated NZUs. The worst case scenario is that if the current ETS regime survives, there will be land forfeitures starting around 50 or 60 years from now.
Maori land is likely to be the most vulnerable.
This analysis App has been designed to assist with planning forestry projects by considering scenarios. However it should not be used without competent professional oversight and advice, especially before any decision are made.
